Commemorating 58 Years of Majority Rule: Honoring Equality, Democracy, and National Unity
On Friday, January 10, the Department of Immigration joined other government officials, armed forces, civil leaders, and members of the public in commemorating the 58th Anniversary of Majority Rule. The ecumenical service, held at the Church of God of Prophecy Cathedral on East and Quakoo Streets, reflected on the monumental events of January 10, 1967, a pivotal day in The Bahamas’ history.
The service paid tribute to the historical significance of Majority Rule, a milestone that granted all Bahamians the full rights to participate in the constitutional, political, social, cultural, and economic spheres of the nation. The event highlighted the triumphs of the Progressive Liberal Party, led by Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling, whose 1967 election victory—secured with the support of Sir Randol Fawkes and Sir Alvin Braynen—ushered in the first Majority Rule Cabinet.
In a show of solidarity and reverence for this historic occasion, officers from the Department of Immigration were in attendance, including Director William Pratt and other senior officials. Their presence underscored the Department’s ongoing commitment to upholding the ideals of equality, democracy, and national unity that Majority Rule represents.
